Carol started this diary on October 15, 1930 when she was fourteen years old and had found out that she was going to ride from her home in New Jersey to spend the winter with her Aunt Dot and Uncle Fred Chappell (an astronomical photographer) at Lick Observatory in California, up on Mount Hamilton.
